- Cattleya
orchids
have been named after William Cattley
in the early
19th century.
He was
credited with starting some
hybrids from orchids sent to him
as packing material from Brazil.
There was a bulb
amongst the packing
material, and he nurture it
in his greenhouse to see if
anything will come out. The
gorgeous cattleya orchid
flower was the result.
The earliest named cattleya
was the cattleya labiata.
Today cattleyas are
probably the most popular orchid plant.
In a real application, the size
of this orchid flower is
very suitable for corsages.
The
plants have one of the
largest flowers,
around 10 cm across,
sometimes even slightly more.
Most blossom only once per year
and the
flowers last only about up to 3 weeks.
New
hybrids are
grown today lasting
longer and blooming
more than once per year.
It has been shown that the
hybrids now can be
bred for more frequent blooming
and show flower for up to 5
-6 weeks. It seems they are easier to grow
for hobbyist who
don't have a greenhouse.
As you can see at the cattleya orchid
photos here, the
orchid hybrids have
great colors. Cattleyas
have a relatively short
bloom cycle, take a few
and
you always will have
great colors in the
house. The photo

To check if a plant needs
water put your finger into
the potting material, if the
finger comes out dry it
needs watering. When
watering cattleya orchids
the water should be able to
flow towards the plant and
then drain right out into
the sink.
If the orchid plants
have blossom in the winter
or spring means that the
cattleya orchids should have
a rest period of about 6 to
8 weeks. During this time
water them about once a week
and keep the lighting up. If
the cattleya orchids blossom
in the summer time no rest
period is needed.
Fertilizing of orchid
plants should be done
every week with a balanced
formula. If the
cattleya
orchid plant is
flowering
you can
fertilize
with a
blossoming
mixture
with a
higher
nitrogen
factor,
e.g.
30-10-10.
With
these
rather
simple
steps
you will
get many
years of
joy from
